Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) Programme - Overview

  • Will support projects in the Health Services Research and Public Health arenas, based on quantitative or qualitative methods
  • Will fund high quality, investigator led research of relevance to the NHS
  • Will support research related to the day-to-day practice in areas identified by health service staff themselves and developed by them with appropriate high quality academic input
  • Will be modelled on the old regional funding streams for applied and practice based research
  • Will select proposals for funding on the basis of both the quality of the research and the relevance of research to the broader NHS
  • Open access to all researchers across England
  • Up to £25 million per year will be available for this scheme
  • 9 regional commissioning panels will be convened, corresponding to GO regions
  • A local chair will be appointed in each region
  • Regional budget allocated on a per population basis
  • Each panel will meet 3 times a year
  • Maximum grant £250k, 3 years duration
  • Single stage application process
  • All electronic application and assessment process will be developed
  • Administered by the NIHR Central Commissioning Facility (NIHRCCF)
