The Health Survey for England

Conducted: Annually - 1991 to present

The main topics assessed include general health, nutrition, physical fitness and exercise and the use of health services and medical care. Measurement occurs by questionnaires, physical assessment and blood samples. The following factors are assessed every year:

  • general health
  • psychosocial factors
  • socioeconomic factors
  • demographic factors
  • blood pressure
  • height
  • weight
  • smoking and drinking habits
  • the use of health services and prescribed medicines

From 1991 to 1994 only adults aged 16 years and over were surveyed, from 1995 to 2000 all individuals aged 2 years and over were surveyed and from 2001 onwards there has been no age restrictions as to who is surveyed.

Each year a different topic is given a special focus:

  • In 1993, 1994, 1998 and 2003 the focus was on cardiovascular disease
  • In 1994 the focus was on health and lifestyle indicators within SHAs.
  • In 1995 the focus was on asthma, accidents and disability
  • In 1996 the focus was on asthma, accidents and special measures of general health
  • In 1997 and 2002 the focus was on children and young people
  • In 1999 and 2004 the focus was on ethnic groups
  • In 2000 the focus was on older people and social exclusion
  • In 2001 the focus was on respiratory disease and atopic conditions, disability and non-fatal accidents.
  • In 2004/5 the focus was on childhood obesity in under 11s
  • In 2005 the focus was on the health of older people
  • In 2010 the focus is on obesity

The General Household Survey

Conducted: Annually - 1971 to present (no survey in 1997-1998 or 1999-2000 due to survey review and redevelopment)

This is a survey of people living in private households. All adults aged 16 years and over are interviewed and information on children in the household is also collected. The core topics covered include:

  • household and family
  • household tenure and accommodation
  • consumer durables
  • employment
  • education
  • health and use of health services
  • smoking and drinking
  • income
  • demographic information
  • migration

Around 13000 people are surveyed each year in a face to face interview, with a response rate close to 72%.
